Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages.
Malaise
From Purmerend, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp will set off again on Thursday, May 29. It is pleasant to walk along well-maintained roads along meadows and fields. However, Monnickendam is disappointing. Van Lennep writes that the city, even more so than Purmerend, is in decline. This applies to more villages and cities in the Netherlands: there is economic malaise during that period. The travelers then walk to Broek in Waterland, the village that was already internationally known for its beauty. Even Emperor Joseph II of the Holy Roman Empire and Napoleon came to take a look. However, Van Lennep is not impressed.

Later that day, the traveling companions let a skipper sail them to Marken. When the inhabitants ask the skipper who these gentlemen are, he jokingly answers that Van Lennep is the king. The residents seem to believe it. Van Lennep calls the island"(...) a swamp with several neighborhoods and one more important village\\\". Back on the mainland, the young men also walk to Ilpendam. At the end of the day, Van Lennep pops the blisters on his feet.

The next day the companions walk to Oosthuizen via Edam. They visit the mausoleum of Lord De Vicq and enjoy the view over the Beemster. In Hoorn they take a look at the Beggar's House. Here they are outraged to hear how a woman died in childbirth after learning that her husband had been sent to the Ommerschans penal colony.
